Kaṇhadīpāyanacariya
Dark Light’s Conduct
1.1
“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,
“Then again when I was
1.2
kaṇhadīpāyano isi;
the seer Dark Light,
1.3
Paropaññāsavassāni,
for more than fifty years
1.4
anabhiratocariṁ ahaṁ.
I lived dissatisfied.
2.1
Na koci etaṁ jānāti,
No-one knew of this
2.2
Anabhiratimanaṁ mama;
dissatisfaction of mine,
2.3
Ahañhi kassaci nācikkhiṁ,
for I mentioned it to no-one,
2.4
Arati me carati mānase.
it only went on in my mind.
3.1
Sabrahmacārī maṇḍabyo,
Maṇḍabya, a spiritual companion
3.2
sahāyo me mahāisi;
and friend of mine was a great seer.
3.3
Pubbakammasamāyutto,
Bound to a deed in a past life,
3.4
sūlamāropanaṁ labhi.
he got impaled on a stake.
4.1
Tamahaṁ upaṭṭhahitvāna,
I nursed him
4.2
ārogyamanupāpayiṁ;
and brought him back to health.
4.3
Āpucchitvāna āgañchiṁ,
Asking leave, I returned
4.4
yaṁ mayhaṁ sakamassamaṁ.
to my own hermitage.
5.1
Sahāyo brāhmaṇo mayhaṁ,
A brahmin friend of mine,
5.2
bhariyaṁ ādāya puttakaṁ;
bringing wife and child,
5.3
Tayo janā samāgantvā,
came to me, all three of them,
5.4
āgañchuṁ pāhunāgataṁ.
as my guests.
6.1
Sammodamāno tehi saha,
As I exchanged greetings with them,
6.2
nisinno sakamassame;
seated in my own hermitage,
6.3
Dārako vaṭṭamanukkhipaṁ,
the boy threw a ball
6.4
āsīvisamakopayi.
and angered a viper.
7.1
Tato so vaṭṭagataṁ maggaṁ,
Then the boy, looking which way
7.2
anvesanto kumārako;
the ball had gone,
7.3
Āsīvisassa hatthena,
touched the viper’s head
7.4
uttamaṅgaṁ parāmasi.
with his hand.
8.1
Tassa āmasane kuddho,
Angered at his touch,
8.2
sappo visabalassito;
the snake, relying on its potent poison,
8.3
Kupito paramakopena,
completely enraged,
8.4
aḍaṁsi dārakaṁ khaṇe.
bit the boy right away.
9.1
Sahadaṭṭho āsīvisena,
When bitten by the viper,
9.2
dārako papati bhūmiyaṁ;
the boy fainted on the ground.
9.3
Tenāhaṁ dukkhito āsiṁ,
It made me distraught,
9.4
mama vāhasi taṁ dukkhaṁ.
the pain became as if mine.
10.1
Tyāhaṁ assāsayitvāna,
Comforting the parents,
10.2
dukkhite sokasallite;
in their suffering and sorrow,
10.3
Paṭhamaṁ akāsiṁ kiriyaṁ,
I made the first act,
10.4
aggaṁ saccaṁ varuttamaṁ.
the original, supreme declaration of truth:
11.1
‘Sattāhamevāhaṁ pasannacitto,
‘For just seven days with a mind of faith
11.2
Puññatthiko acariṁ brahmacariyaṁ;
I led the spiritual life seeking merit.
11.3
Athāparaṁ yaṁ caritaṁ mamedaṁ,
My life since then,
11.4
Vassāni paññāsasamādhikāni.
for fifty years or more,
12.1
Akāmako vāhi ahaṁ carāmi,
I have lived unwillingly.
12.2
Etena saccena suvatthi hotu;
By this truth, may he be well!
12.3
Hataṁ visaṁ jīvatu yaññadatto’.
May the poison die! May Yaññadatta live!’
13.1
Saha sacce kate mayhaṁ,
As I declared this truth,
13.2
visavegena vedhito;
the boy trembling with poison,
13.3
Abujjhitvāna vuṭṭhāsi,
awoke and got up,
13.4
arogo cāsi māṇavo;
the brahmin youth was well.
13.5
Saccena me samo natthi,
There is no-one to equal my truthfulness:
13.6
esā me saccapāramī”ti.
this is my perfection of truth.”
14.1
Kaṇhadīpāyanacariyaṁ ekādasamaṁ.
