Wake Up

1.1

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

“Jāgaro cassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya sato sampajāno samāhito pamudito vippasanno ca tattha kālavipassī ca kusalesu dhammesu.

“A mendicant should meditate wakeful, mendicants, mindful and aware, joyful and clear, and at times discern the skillful qualities in that state.

Jāgarassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno viharato satassa sampajānassa samāhitassa pamuditassa vippasannassa tattha kālavipassino kusalesu dhammesu dvinnaṁ phalānaṁ aññataraṁ phalaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—

A mendicant who meditates in this way can expect one of two results:

diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitā”ti.

enlightenment in this very life, or if there’s residue left behind, non-return.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

On this it is said:

“Jāgarantā suṇāthetaṁ,

“Listen up, wakeful ones!

3.2

ye suttā te pabujjhatha;

And those asleep, wake up!

3.3

Suttā jāgaritaṁ seyyo,

Wakefulness is better than sleep,

3.4

natthi jāgarato bhayaṁ.

the wakeful have nothing to fear.

4.1

Yo jāgaro ca satimā sampajāno,

Those who are wakeful, mindful and aware,

4.2

Samāhito mudito vippasanno ca;

immersed in samādhi, joyful and clear,

4.3

Kālena so sammā dhammaṁ parivīmaṁsamāno,

rightly investigating the Dhamma in good time,

4.4

Ekodibhūto vihane tamaṁ so.

at one, would banish the darkness.

5.1

Tasmā have jāgariyaṁ bhajetha,

That’s why you should apply yourself to wakefulness.

5.2

Ātāpī bhikkhu nipako jhānalābhī;

A keen and alert mendicant, possessing absorption,

5.3

Saṁyojanaṁ jātijarāya chetvā,

having cut the fetter of birth and old age,

5.4

Idheva sambodhimanuttaraṁ phuse”ti.

would experience supreme awakening <j>in this very life.”

6.1

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
