Sakka In Name Only

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate.

At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.

Atha kho sakkanāmako yakkho yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

Then a spirit who was Sakka in name only went up to the Buddha, and addressed him in verse:

“Sabbaganthappahīnassa,

“You’ve given up all ties,

2.2

vippamuttassa te sato;

and are fully freed.

2.3

Samaṇassa na taṁ sādhu,

It’s not a good idea for you, ascetic,

yadaññamanusāsasī”ti.

to be instructing others.”

“Yena kenaci vaṇṇena,

“No matter how you explain why

saṁvāso sakka jāyati;

people gather together, Sakka,

Na taṁ arahati sappañño,

it’s unworthy for a wise person

manasā anukampituṁ.

not to think of the other with sympathy.

Manasā ce pasannena,

If you instruct others

yadaññamanusāsati;

with a mind clear and confident,

Na tena hoti saṁyutto,

your compassion and empathy

yānukampā anuddayā”ti.

don’t create attachments.”
