Abhinandasutta

Taking Pleasure

1.1

Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

At Sāvatthī.

“Yo, bhikkhave, pathavīdhātuṁ abhinandati, dukkhaṁ so abhinandati.

“Mendicants, if you take pleasure in the earth element, you take pleasure in suffering.

Yo dukkhaṁ abhinandati, ‘aparimutto so dukkhasmā’ti vadāmi.

If you take pleasure in suffering, you’re not free from suffering, I say.

If you take pleasure in the water element …

yo tejodhātuṁ …

If you take pleasure in the fire element …

yo vāyodhātuṁ abhinandati, dukkhaṁ so abhinandati.
