“Sattime, bhikkhave, anusayā.

“Mendicants, there are these seven underlying tendencies.

Katame satta?

What seven?

Kāmarāgānusayo, paṭighānusayo, diṭṭhānusayo, vicikicchānusayo, mānānusayo, bhavarāgānusayo, avijjānusayo—

The underlying tendencies of sensual desire, aversion, views, doubt, conceit, desire for continued existence, and ignorance.

ime kho, bhikkhave, sattānusayā.

These are the seven underlying tendencies.

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, sattannaṁ anusayānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.

The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these seven underlying tendencies.”
