“Majjhe sarasmiṁ tiṭṭhataṁ,
“For those overwhelmed by old age and death,”

(iccāyasmā kappo)
said Venerable Kappa,

Oghe jāte mahabbhaye;
“stuck mid-stream

Jarāmaccuparetānaṁ,
as the terrifying flood arises,

Dīpaṁ pabrūhi mārisa;
tell me an island, good fellow.
1.6
Tvañca me dīpamakkhāhi,
Explain to me an island
1.7
Yathāyidaṁ nāparaṁ siyā”.
so this may occur no further.”

replied the Buddha,

Jarāmaccuparetānaṁ,

Dīpaṁ pabrūmi kappa te.
I shall tell you an island, Kappa.

Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ,
Having nothing, taking nothing:

etaṁ dīpaṁ anāparaṁ;
this is the island with nothing further.

Nibbānaṁ iti naṁ brūmi,
I call it extinguishment,
3.4
jarāmaccuparikkhayaṁ.
the ending of old age and death.
4.1
Etadaññāya ye satā,
Those who have fully understood this, mindful,
4.2
Diṭṭhadhammābhinibbutā;
are quenched in this very life.
4.3
Na te māravasānugā,
They don’t fall under Māra’s sway,
4.4
Na te mārassa paddhagū”ti.
nor are they his footmen.”
