1.1

“Sudesito cakkhumatā,

It was well-taught by the Clear-eyed One,

1.2

buddhenādiccabandhunā;

the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun,

1.3

Sabbasaṁyojanātīto,

who has transcended all fetters,

1.4

sabbavaṭṭavināsano.

and destroyed all rolling-on.

2.1

Niyyāniko uttaraṇo,

Emancipating, it leads across,

2.2

taṇhāmūlavisosano;

drying up the root of craving,

2.3

Visamūlaṁ āghātanaṁ,

and, having cut off the poisonous root, <j>the slaughterhouse,

2.4

chetvā pāpeti nibbutiṁ.

it leads to quenching.

3.1

Aññāṇamūlabhedāya,

By breaking the root of unknowing,

3.2

kammayantavighāṭano;

it smashes the mechanism of deeds,

3.3

Viññāṇānaṁ pariggahe,

and drops the thunderbolt of knowledge

3.4

ñāṇavajiranipātano.

on the taking up of consciousnesses.

Vedanānaṁ viññāpano,

It informs us of our feelings,

upādānappamocano;

releasing us from grasping,

4.3

Bhavaṁ aṅgārakāsuṁva,

contemplating with understanding

ñāṇena anupassano.

all states of existence as a pit of burning coals.

5.1

Mahāraso sugambhīro,

It’s very sweet and very deep,

5.2

jarāmaccunivāraṇo;

holding birth and death at bay;

5.3

Ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo,

it is the noble eightfold path—

dukkhūpasamano sivo.

the stilling of suffering, bliss.

6.1

Kammaṁ kammanti ñatvāna,

Knowing deed as deed

6.2

vipākañca vipākato;

and result as result;

6.3

Paṭiccuppannadhammānaṁ,

seeing dependently originated phenomena

6.4

yathāvālokadassano;

as if they were in a clear light;

6.5

Mahākhemaṅgamo santo,

leading to the great sanctuary and peace,

6.6

pariyosānabhaddako”ti.
