“Saddhāya pabbajitvāna,

Having gone forth in faith

1.2

agārasmānagāriyaṁ;

from the lay life to homelessness,

1.3

Vicariṁhaṁ tena tena,

I wandered here and there,

1.4

lābhasakkāraussukā.

jealous of possessions and honors.

2.1

Riñcitvā paramaṁ atthaṁ,

Neglecting the highest goal,

2.2

hīnamatthaṁ asevihaṁ;

I pursued the lowest.

2.3

Kilesānaṁ vasaṁ gantvā,

Under the sway of corruptions,

2.4

sāmaññatthaṁ na bujjhihaṁ.

I never knew the goal of the ascetic life.

3.1

Tassā me ahu saṁvego,

I was struck with a sense of urgency

3.2

nisinnāya vihārake;

as I was sitting in my hut:

Ummaggapaṭipannāmhi,

“I’m walking the wrong path,

3.4

taṇhāya vasamāgatā.

under the sway of craving.

Appakaṁ jīvitaṁ mayhaṁ,

My life is short,

jarā byādhi ca maddati;

trampled by old age and sickness.

4.3

Purāyaṁ bhijjati kāyo,

Before this body breaks apart,

4.4

na me kālo pamajjituṁ.

there is no time for me to be careless.”

Yathābhūtamavekkhantī,

I examined in line with the truth

5.2

khandhānaṁ udayabbayaṁ;

the rise and fall of the aggregates.

5.3

Vimuttacittā uṭṭhāsiṁ,

I stood up with mind liberated,

5.4

kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.

having fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
