Both Kinds of Benefit

1.1

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

“Ekadhammo, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhigayha tiṭṭhati—

“This one thing, mendicants, when developed and cultivated, secures equal benefits for both

diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ samparāyikañca.

this life and lives to come.

Katamo ekadhammo?

What one thing?

2.4

Appamādo kusalesu dhammesu.

Diligence in skillful qualities.

2.5

Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ekadhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhigayha tiṭṭhati—

This is the one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures equal benefits for both

diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ samparāyikañcā”ti.

this life and lives to come.”

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

On this it is said:

“Appamādaṁ pasaṁsanti,

“The astute praise diligence

3.2

puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā;

in making merit.

Appamatto ubho atthe,

Being diligent, an astute person

3.4

adhigaṇhāti paṇḍito.

secures both benefits:

4.1

Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho,

the benefit in this life,

4.2

yo cattho samparāyiko;

and in lives to come.

4.3

Atthābhisamayā dhīro,

Attentive, comprehending the meaning,

4.4

paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.

they are said to be astute.”

5.1

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
