Sabhiya

1.1

“Pare ca na vijānanti,

When others do not understand,

1.2

mayamettha yamāmase;

let us, who do understand this,

1.3

Ye ca tattha vijānanti,

restrain ourselves in this regard;

1.4

tato sammanti medhagā.

for that is how conflicts are laid to rest.

Yadā ca avijānantā,

And when those who don’t understand

2.2

iriyantyamarā viya;

behave as though they were immortal,

2.3

Vijānanti ca ye dhammaṁ,

those who understand the Dhamma

2.4

āturesu anāturā.

are like the healthy among the sick.

3.1

Yaṁ kiñci sithilaṁ kammaṁ,

Any lax act,

3.2

saṅkiliṭṭhañca yaṁ vataṁ;

any corrupt observance,

3.3

Saṅkassaraṁ brahmacariyaṁ,

or suspicious spiritual life,

3.4

na taṁ hoti mahapphalaṁ.

is not very fruitful.

Yassa sabrahmacārīsu,

Whoever has no respect

4.2

gāravo nūpalabbhati;

for their spiritual companions

4.3

Ārakā hoti saddhammā,

is as far from true Dhamma

4.4

nabhaṁ puthaviyā yathā”ti.

as the firmament from the earth.
