Visākhāyasahāyikānaṁvatthu
1
Ko nu hāso kimānando,
What is joy, what is laughter,
2
niccaṁ pajjalite sati;
when the flames are ever burning?

Andhakārena onaddhā,
Shrouded by darkness,
4
padīpaṁ na gavesatha.
would you not seek a light?

Passa cittakataṁ bimbaṁ,
See this fancy puppet,
2
arukāyaṁ samussitaṁ;
a body built of sores,
3
Āturaṁ bahusaṅkappaṁ,
diseased, obsessed over,
4
yassa natthi dhuvaṁ ṭhiti.
in which nothing lasts at all.

Parijiṇṇamidaṁ rūpaṁ,
This body is decrepit and frail,
2
roganīḷaṁ pabhaṅguraṁ;
a nest of disease.
3
Bhijjati pūtisandeho,
This foul carcass falls apart,
4
maraṇantañhi jīvitaṁ.
for life ends in death.

Yānimāni apatthāni,
These dove-grey bones

alābūneva sārade;
are tossed away like

Kāpotakāni aṭṭhīni,
dried gourds in the autumn—

tāni disvāna kā rati.
what joy is there in such a sight?

Janapadakalyāṇīrūpanandātherīvatthu

Aṭṭhīnaṁ nagaraṁ kataṁ,
In this city built of bones,
2
maṁsalohitalepanaṁ;
plastered with flesh and blood,
3
Yattha jarā ca maccu ca,
old age and death are stashed away,
4
māno makkho ca ohito.
along with conceit and contempt.

Jīranti ve rājarathā sucittā,
Fancy chariots of kings wear out,
2
Atho sarīrampi jaraṁ upeti;
and even this body gets old.
3
Satañca dhammo na jaraṁ upeti,
But the truth of the good never gets old—
4
Santo have sabbhi pavedayanti.
so the good proclaim to the good.

Appassutāyaṁ puriso,
A person of little learning
2
balībaddhova jīrati;
ages like an ox—
3
Maṁsāni tassa vaḍḍhanti,
their flesh grows,
4
paññā tassa na vaḍḍhati.
but not their wisdom.

Anekajātisaṁsāraṁ,
Transmigrating through countless rebirths,
2
sandhāvissaṁ anibbisaṁ;
I’ve journeyed without reward,
3
Gahakāraṁ gavesanto,
searching for the house-builder;
4
dukkhā jāti punappunaṁ.
painful is birth again and again.

Gahakāraka diṭṭhosi,
I’ve seen you, house-builder!
2
puna gehaṁ na kāhasi;
You won’t build a house again!
3
Sabbā te phāsukā bhaggā,
Your rafters are all broken,
4
gahakūṭaṁ visaṅkhataṁ;
your roof-peak demolished.
5
Visaṅkhāragataṁ cittaṁ,
The mind, set on demolition,
6
taṇhānaṁ khayamajjhagā.
has reached the end of cravings.

Mahādhanaseṭṭhiputtavatthu
1
Acaritvā brahmacariyaṁ,
When young they spurned the spiritual path
2
aladdhā yobbane dhanaṁ;
and failed to earn any wealth.
3
Jiṇṇakoñcāva jhāyanti,
Now they brood like old cranes
4
khīṇamaccheva pallale.
in a pond bereft of fish.
1
Acaritvā brahmacariyaṁ,
When young they spurned the spiritual path
2
aladdhā yobbane dhanaṁ;
and failed to earn any wealth.
3
Senti cāpātikhīṇāva,
Now they lie like spent arrows,
4
purāṇāni anutthunaṁ.
bemoaning over things past.
