Yassa jitaṁ nāvajīyati,
He whose victory may not be undone,
2
Jitaṁ yassa noyāti koci loke;
a victory unrivaled in all the world;
3
Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,
by what track would you trace that Buddha,
4
Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.
who leaves no track in his infinite range?
1
Yassa jālinī visattikā,
Of craving, the weaver, the clinger, he has none:
2
Taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave;
so where can he be traced?
3
Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,
By what track would you trace that Buddha,
4
Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.
who leaves no track in his infinite range?
1
Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā,
The attentive intent on absorption,
2
nekkhammūpasame ratā;
who love the peace of renunciation,
3
Devāpi tesaṁ pihayanti,
the Buddhas, ever mindful,
4
sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ.
are envied by even the gods.

Erakapattanāgarājavatthu
1
Kiccho manussapaṭilābho,
It’s hard to gain a human birth;
2
kicchaṁ maccāna jīvitaṁ;
the life of mortals is hard;
3
Kicchaṁ saddhammassavanaṁ,
it’s hard to hear the true teaching;
4
kiccho buddhānamuppādo.
the arising of Buddhas is hard.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu
1
Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṁ,
Not to do any evil;
2
kusalassa upasampadā;
to embrace the good;
3
Sacittapariyodapanaṁ,
to purify one’s mind:
4
etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.
this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
1
Khantī paramaṁ tapo titikkhā,
Patient acceptance is the ultimate fervor.
2
Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ vadanti buddhā;
Extinguishment is the ultimate, say the Buddhas.
3
Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī,
No true renunciate injures another,
4
Na samaṇo hoti paraṁ viheṭhayanto.
nor does an ascetic hurt another.

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto,
Not speaking ill nor doing harm;
2
Pātimokkhe ca saṁvaro;
restraint in the monastic code;
3
Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṁ,
moderation in eating;
4
Pantañca sayanāsanaṁ;
staying in remote lodgings;
5
Adhicitte ca āyogo,
commitment to the higher mind—
6
Etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.
this is the instruction of the Buddhas.

Anabhiratabhikkhuvatthu
1
Na kahāpaṇavassena,
Even if it were raining money,
2
titti kāmesu vijjati;
you’d not be sated in sensual pleasures.
3
Appassādā dukhā kāmā,
An astute person understands that sensual pleasures
4
iti viññāya paṇḍito.
offer little gratification and much suffering.
1
Api dibbesu kāmesu,
Thus they find no delight
2
ratiṁ so nādhigacchati;
even in celestial pleasures.
3
Taṇhakkhayarato hoti,
A disciple of the fully awakened Buddha
4
sammāsambuddhasāvako.
delights in the ending of craving.

Aggidattabrāhmaṇavatthu
1
Bahuṁ ve saraṇaṁ yanti,
So many go for refuge
2
pabbatāni vanāni ca;
to mountains and forest groves,
3
Ārāmarukkhacetyāni,
to shrines in tended parks;
4
manussā bhayatajjitā.
those people are driven by fear.
1
Netaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,
But such refuge is no sanctuary,
2
netaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;
it is no supreme refuge.
3
Netaṁ saraṇamāgamma,
By going to that refuge,
4
sabbadukkhā pamuccati.
you’re not released from all suffering.
1
Yo ca buddhañca dhammañca,
One gone for refuge to the Buddha,
2
saṅghañca saraṇaṁ gato;
to his teaching and to the Saṅgha,
3
Cattāri ariyasaccāni,
sees the four noble truths
4
sammappaññāya passati.
with right understanding:
1
Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,
suffering, suffering’s origin,
2
dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;
suffering’s transcendence,
3
Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,
and the noble eightfold path
4
dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.
that leads to the stilling of suffering.

Etaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,
Such refuge is a sanctuary,
2
etaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;
it is the supreme refuge.
3
Etaṁ saraṇamāgamma,
By going to that refuge,
4
sabbadukkhā pamuccati.
you’re released from all suffering.

Ānandattherapañhavatthu
1
Dullabho purisājañño,
It’s hard to find a thoroughbred man:
2
na so sabbattha jāyati;
they’re not born just anywhere.
3
Yattha so jāyati dhīro,
A family where that attentive one is born
4
taṁ kulaṁ sukhamedhati.
prospers in happiness.
1
Sukho buddhānamuppādo,
Happy, the arising of Buddhas!
2
sukhā saddhammadesanā;
Happy, the teaching of Dhamma!
3
Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī,
Happy is the harmony of the Saṅgha,
4
samaggānaṁ tapo sukho.
and the striving of the harmonious is happy.

Kassapadasabalassasuvaṇṇacetiyavatthu
1
Pūjārahe pūjayato,
When a person venerates the worthy—
2
buddhe yadi va sāvake;
the Buddha or his disciple,
3
Papañcasamatikkante,
who have transcended proliferation,
4
tiṇṇasokapariddave.
and have left behind grief and lamentation,
1
Te tādise pūjayato,
quenched, fearing nothing from any quarter—
2
nibbute akutobhaye;
the merit of one venerating such as these,
3
Na sakkā puññaṁ saṅkhātuṁ,
cannot be calculated by anyone,
4
imettamapi kenaci.
saying it is just this much.
